The majority of mandatory minicamps kicked off around the NFL on Tuesday, bringing us that much closer to the season being here.
Former Oregon Ducks QB Dillon Gabriel is one of four healthy quarterbacks currently with the Cleveland Browns and one of two rookies, alongside Shedeur Sanders. A third-round pick, Gabriel has a legitimate chance to climb as high as the starting spot on the depth chart this fall.
Cleveland is hosting an open quarterback competition, and Gabriel is firmly in the mix. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski is a known admirer of Gabriel’s game and played a key role in bringing him to Cleveland. Since turning pro, the former Duck has opened up about his adjustment to the NFL.
“I think just being able to adapt as quickly as possible,” Gabriel said about the biggest adjustment. “You know, I think that’s a challenge for anyone. There’s a time within that you have to work through. But I think I just go back to being present, you know, and not being able to dwell on a regression or get too high with a progression, you know, and being just even-keeled throughout that.
“So I’ve been trying to just stay balanced in that way. But every single day there’s something to get better at. So just approaching it that way, for sure.”
That’s exactly the mindset any rookie quarterback should bring. Gabriel appears to be a calm, grounded presence in the Browns’ locker room and has reportedly been well received so far. The former Oregon star could end up as the backup in 2025—but the Browns likely intend to give him a real opportunity to show what he can do on the field this season.
Cleveland holds two first-round picks in next year’s draft, so it’s critical to determine whether Gabriel—or Sanders—is the long-term answer at quarterback. The team needs clarity before deciding whether to pursue another quarterback next April.
Gabriel finds himself in a unique situation with two rookie quarterbacks on the roster. That alone reflects how determined the Browns are to move on from the Deshaun Watson era. If Gabriel turns out to be the guy, there will be a lot of happy fans in Northeast Ohio.
