A former Tennessee Vols quarterback is set to serve in an important role in 2025 for one of UT football's top SEC rivals.
Gators Online reported on Monday that Florida Gators starting quarterback DJ Lagway will likely be limited to start fall camp.
According to the report, Lagway, who has been in a walking boot, is dealing with a calf injury. It's unclear how much time Lagway will miss.
Former Volunteers quarterback Harrison Bailey, who has also spent time at UNLV and Louisville, is the backup to Lagway.
Bailey, who transferred to Florida earlier this offseason, should receive some first-team reps during fall camp with Lagway sidelined.
“I think we wanted to add a player that has some experience, that played in games, he kind of fit that profile,” said Florida head coach Billy Napier earlier this year of Bailey. “I think Harrison has played a lot of football, he’s prepared as a starter or backup a lot of weeks, so I think he’s played in some good systems, there’s a ton of carry over there, and the guy spins the ball well. He’s an athlete, intelligent, quarterback that’s got a good pedigree. He’s a good add to the team.”
Bailey saw increased reps during spring practice due to Lagway being limited with a shoulder injury.
There's a seemingly good chance that Bailey will play some important snaps for the Gators at some point in 2025. Lagway's had some tough luck with injuries to start his college career (he also dealt with a hamstring injury last season, which caused him to miss Florida's loss to the Texas Longhorns). And it seems the injury bug isn't leaving Lagway alone.
Tennessee plays Florida on November 22 in Gainesville. Bailey, who played two seasons for the Vols (2020 and 2021) made his first career start in Gainesville on December 5, 2020.
