It has been a challenging offseason for former five-star Texas Longhorns wide receiver Johntay Cook II.
After playing in 19 games over the last two seasons for the Longhorns, recording eight receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns in 2024, his career has taken a tough turn.
On Feb. 4, Cook was arrested on multiple charges, including two misdemeanors for theft and interfering with public duties. Just over a week later, he was arrested again in Desoto, Texas, this time on marijuana possession charges.
In November, Cook made the decision to leave the Longhorns program, and shortly after, he left the Washington football team, having struggled to find his footing. Once one of the highest-rated recruits in the country when he committed to Texas, Cook has faced significant challenges in his career, according to ESPN.

When he left Texas is was viewed as "mutual decision" between Cook and head coach Steve Sarkisian. Following his departure Sarkisian unveiled his best wishes to him and his family.
"We have nothing but respect for [Cook] and his family, and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors," Sarkisian said in November.
Cook is currently not on a team but still has plenty of eligibility left if he decides to continue pursuing his football career. Coming out of DeSoto High School, it seemed like a given that he would go on to have success at the next level.
According to MaxPreps, Cook totaled 166 receptions, 3,026 receiving yards, and 50 receiving touchdowns over the course of his high school career.
