FSU Head Coach Mike Norvell Takes Aim Ahead of Highly-Anticipated 2023 Season
USA TODAY Sports

The Florida State football freight train has been steadfast.

The Seminoles have transformed from a 3-6 (2-6 ACC) team in 2020 into a 10-3 (5-3 ACC) 2022 run that has left college football experts and aficionados remembering the high standard of success that is emerging again in Tallahassee.

"The level that they have to push to perform to is their best, and that's what we ultimately can control," head coach Mike Norvell said during a recent interview on ESPN's 'Always College Football.' "I'm glad that our players do not put limits to what they can accomplish, but on the flip side of it, none of that matters if you're not willing to show up every day and continue to grow, continue to get better."

Norvell has consistently emphasized the message of 'trust the process', as evidenced by his success in helping players take the next step into the NFL. Defensive end Jermaine Johnson (Jets), safety Jammie Robinson (Panthers), Jashaun Corbin (Giants) and most recently, going back to his tenure at Memphis, Norvell played a key role in developing players such as Tony Pollard (Cowboys), Darrell Henderson (Rams), and Antonio Gibson (Commanders).

"It is truly a process, and you—I know you hear that a lot—but if we can improve; if we can get better; if we can become a closer team in all areas, I've got a lot of confidence in the team that I coach and the young men and the investment that they've made throughout this journey."

The 'Noles are set for a primetime showdown under the lights against the LSU Tigers on September 3, and it is expected to be another dog fight after the 2022 upset in New Orleans that left the Tigers eager for a rematch.

"This team, I think, has great ability to accomplish wonderful things," Norvell said. "And the first chance that we get is against LSU, and you all want to see us go play our best."

Many players, both new and returning, will have the opportunity to make an impact. The repeated mantra with all of the incoming 'Noles underscores that regardless of being a recruit or a transfer, the focus lies on fitting into the program's culture.

"The guys that we're bringing in as transfers, you know they're the right fit. They're great players, great young men. They embrace the culture that we have, and they're really good. So, as long as we continue to get the right guys to come into our program and bring that experience, bring all the things that have played a part of their journey, and can apply that into our program here at Florida State, it's exciting for us."

That fit is evidenced by successful transfers and leading players returning by position. Wide receiver Johnny Wilson, tight end Jaheim Bell, wide receiver Keon Coleman, running back Trey Benson, defensive end Jared Verse and countless others are primed to make an impact as fall camp progresses.

Regardless of where the Seminoles end up come January 2024, the culture shift has permanently been implanted and should give fans a sense of reprieve heading into a highly-anticipated season.
