The LSU Tigers’ dream of an undefeated 2025 season came crashing down in Oxford. The No. 4 Tigers fell 24-19 to the No. 13 Ole Miss Rebels, raising new questions about an offense that has yet to deliver against top competition.

LSU managed just 254 yards and failed to reach 25 points for the fourth time this year. At the center of the concern is quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. Once billed as a Heisman frontrunner, he threw for 197 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The offense has been a major talking point in the last few weeks, as has Nussmeier's health. Almost two weeks ago, head coach Brian Kelly revealed that Nussmeier has been limited in practice due to tightness in his torso.

"He's been slowed a little bit," Kelly previously said. "He's fighting through it, and he's getting better."

Questions About Garrett Nussmeier’s Health

Following his latest performance, Nussmeier was asked about his health, but he chose not to respond.

“I’m not going to answer any questions about my health right now,” Nussmeier said.

Kelly was also asked to provide an update, and he gave a straightforward response.

“Look, all I can tell you is that he’s healthy,” Kelly said.

Heisman Hype Meets Reality

Nussmeier entered the season as a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy and is supported by one of the strongest receiving corps in the country, featuring players like Aaron Anderson, Barion Brown and Nic Anderson. However, he has faced challenges this season. So far, he has thrown for only 1,159 yards, averaging 231.8 yards per game. Additionally, he has recorded just seven touchdowns and three interceptions.

On a positive note, he is completing just over 67% of his passes, which would be a career high for him. However, the offense has been disappointing, as many expected it to be one of the top offenses in college football this season. As they prepare for the game, the Tigers currently rank No. 68 in total offense, No. 30 in passing offense, No. 111 in rushing offense and No. 75 in scoring offense.

What LSU Must Do to Stay in Playoff Race

LSU’s offensive struggles are difficult to ignore, especially given the firepower surrounding Nussmeier at wide receiver. Whether his slow start is the result of injury or inconsistency, the Tigers can’t afford more setbacks if they want to return to the College Football Playoff.

Their defense has carried the load so far, but for LSU to end its national title drought, it will need the version of Nussmeier that was hyped as a Heisman candidate. The coming weeks will determine whether this loss at Ole Miss was just a stumble or the start of a bigger problem in Baton Rouge.
