Kirby Smart, Georgia Bulldogs fans, and media around the country all kept talking about it. Gunner Stockton had to figure out his deep passing game and find more consistency reading the field if Georgia was going to find success in 2025–let alone against the Tennessee Vols.
Heading into the SEC rivalry game against Tennessee, Stockton ranked outside the top 100 FBS passers in average depth of target, and simply was not connecting with receivers down field. That all changed on Saturday as Stockton became exactly who Georgia needed in the shocking overtime win against the Tennessee Vols.
How good was Stockton on deep shots against the Vols? Gunner Stockton finished the day with 304 passing yards, two touchdowns, averaging just shy of 10 yards per attempt as he connected on completions of 17, 18, 28, 31, 36, and 45 yards. He was a completely different player as it looked like he revamped his entire approach to the passing game on Saturday.
While Stockton's late-game heroics will be what's remembered, he was slicing and dicing from the opening drive of the game for Georgia. In fact, Stockton's first offensive play of the game was a beautiful deep dime shot to Colbie Young for 45 yards that he dropped right into the bucket. It was clear he was in the zone right from the start as Georgia scored almost immediately.

Stockton stalled on a short three-and-out on the next drive following his first incredible deep throw, but then he led Georgia on drives of 72 and 88 yards on two of the next three after that.
Despite facing almost constant pressure from Tennessee's relentless pass rush Stockton found star wide receiver Zachariah Branch early and often, including on a short pass to the left that the explosive junior playmaker took to the house for a score.
Kirby Smart and his staff decided to lean on the run game for much of the middle 30 minutes, finding a way to keep the game close until late, but then it was Stockton's unbelievable improvements in the deep passing game that saved the day near the end of regulation.
Stockton connected on a phenomenal 31-yard play to London Humphreys early in the 4th quarter as if to prophesy what was to come. Then with less than 3 minutes to go in the game, down eight points to Tennessee, Stockton made the best throw of his entire career, dropping it right into the lap of London Humphreys in the front right of the end zone (as you can see in the post below).

Running backs Nate Frazier and Josh McCray ended up sealing the deal in overtime for Georgia, and should rightly receive their praise as well, but ultimately the game came down to Stockton's massive steps forward as a passer and processor.
In short, if Stockton plays like he did against Tennessee every week then the Georgia Bulldogs are going to be national title contenders by season's end.
