When the Georgia Bulldogs and Kirby Smart truly want a recruit they generally find themselves firmly in the mix to land that player. And despite a couple recent losses on the recruiting trail, the momentum seems to be bouncing back for Georgia as they find themselves somewhat shockingly in the final mix for a recruit that Smart and his staff only recently began pushing hard to add to the team.
Keshawn Stancil is a highly rated four star recruit out of North Carolina who put up some monstrous numbers last fall (tons of tackles with 20+ made for loss, 9 sacks, 3 forced fumbles). Since then Stancil has risen swiftly up recruiting boards thanks to his high motor and unbelievable power.
Georgia offered Stancil a scholarship as the season was just getting started last fall, which is a bit late compared to most high four star talents the Bulldogs generally target, but he was still growing into the force that he's become today. The Bulldogs also got started extremely late on in-person visits with him, only really seeing him late this spring before he announced an official to Georgia.
It was a bit surprising when Georgia landed an official visit at all given their perceived late interest, but now almost immediately following his trip to Athens, Stancil has narrowed his search officially to just five schools and the Bulldogs are included.

Stancil still has official visits scheduled to see Miami, Penn State, Tennessee, and NC State, but the Vols didn't even make his official top five so that one might be changing soon. Clemson was a bit of a surprise addition to his finalists as well, so Georgia may have to worry about beating the Tigers out, but things are looking good for the Bulldogs' chances.
The Georgia Bulldogs should have a pretty significant need to fill along the defensive line next year, so Smart and his staff should continue pushing hard to land Stancil. Both Warren Brinson and Nazir Stackhouse left for the NFL Draft this offseason. Emerging star Christen Miller is expected to become one of the best defensive linemen in the nation this season and be gone after this fall as well. True freshman Elijah Griffin and a handful of other talented young players may emerge too, but there's a path to a significant role for Keshawn Stancil at Georgia earlier than fans might expect.
As Kirby Smart continues to lean on younger impact defenders a new added layer to his recruiting pitch has begun to emerge. It used to be that players would have to wait their turn to break out due to the depth at Georgia. Now–in an era where Georgia and every other single blue blood program struggles to build out elite depth like they once did–players like Stancil may be leaned on early and often. Let's hope coach Smart can close the deal in the coming weeks.
