The defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs will be getting their co-defensive coordinator back.
After interviewing last week for the Philadelphia Eagles' vacant defensive coordinator position, Glenn Schumann has decided to come back to Athens for his seventh season with the Bulldogs.
To say that this is a win for Georgia would be an understatement. The Bulldogs just lost offensive coordinator Todd Monken to the NFL two weeks ago. He bolted for the Baltimore Ravens to take their vacant offensive coordinator gig.
Being a defensive coordinator for an NFL franchise, and a Super Bowl-contending one at that, would have been a huge step up for Schumann and could have potentially landed him an NFL head coaching gig in the long run. Schumann has deep roots with Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, though.
Schumann was with the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2008-15 when Kirby Smart was Nick Saban's defensive coordinator. When Smart took the UGA job, he brought Schumann to Athens with him to coach Georgia's inside linebackers, and he's been doing that ever since.
Schumann was promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2019 and he clearly feels his allegiance to Smart and the Bulldogs will pay off for him. It's worth noting that UGA has had one of the most impressive defenses in football for a few seasons now, and Schumann certainly deserves some of the credit for that.
