The Minnesota Gophers defeated the Western Illinois Leathernecks 62-10 on Saturday. Minnesota fumbled on their first possession of the game, but that was all Western Illinois was going to get as the Gopher offense found balance and put up 62 points in route to another dominating win.

Dominance

After Michael Brown-Stephens turned the ball over at 14:19 in the first quarter, the Gophers got their act together to completely dominate the rest of the game. Minnesota scored on ten of their 13 possessions (eight touchdowns and two field goals). Minnesota had 679 yards of total offense to the Leathernecks 194. The Gophers had 34 first downs to the Leathernecks eight with a 39:13 to 20:47 time of possession control. The Gophers had over 300 yards passing and rushing, averaging 14.9 yards per pass and 5.9 yards per rush.

Tanner Morgan had a great game going 14-18, throwing for 287 yards and one touchdown. It came as no surprise to see Mohamed Ibrahim leading the way on the ground, rushing for 130 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. Chris Autman-Bell had a nice day as well with five receptions for 118 yards.

Highlights From The Game

Jordan Howden Interception

At 10:37 in the third quarter Henry Ogala took a deep shot and Gopher safety Jordan Howden made an incredible interception. His interception set up a Gopher touchdown, shown in the next highlight.

Gophers Score First Passing Touchdown Of The Year

During the Gophers 38-0 win last week, Minnesota didn’t score a single passing touchdown. All five of their scores came on the ground. While Minnesota certainly did not shy away from the run game (scoring seven of their eight touchdowns on the ground), they finally had one through the air. Tanner Morgan connected with a wide open Brevyn Spann-Ford for a 45-yard touchdown to put the Gophers up 45-3 in the third quarter.

Looking Ahead

Next week the Gophers host the Colorado Buffaloes (0-1) who play at Air Force today. Last year the Gophers beat Colorado in dominating fashion, 30-0 on the road. Western Illinois will host Southern Utah (1-1), who got routed by #13 Utah today 73-7.
