One of the most historic and famous names in the history of football is living on in the NFL, thanks to the Washington Commanders and their most recent coaching news.
On Tuesday, it was reported that the Commanders are hiring Jesse Madden, the grandson of NFL Hall of Famer John Madden, as an offensive quality control coach. Madden played quarterback and defensive back at Michigan and was part of the school's 2024 national championship team.
The hiring of Madden is one of two moves that Washington announced on Tuesday, along with the addition of Brian Schneider as the assistant special teams coach.
Before his foray into the coaching world, Madden played quarterback in his freshman season before switching to defensive back. Madden was a member of the 2024 national championship team at Michigan.
His grandfather, John, is to this day one of the most recognizable names in the football world, known best among the young generation of fans for the EA Sports Madden video games.
Madden was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 191969-1978, where he won one Super Bowl with the franchise. After that, he had a legendary broadcasting career from 1079-2008. During his career as a broadcaster, Madden won 16 Emmy Awards.
He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the class of 2006 and passed away in 2021 at the age of 85.
Whether or not his grandson, Jesse, can come close to achieving the same level of success in his career is beside the point. It's just great to see a family name like Madden continue in the NFL world.
