‘He already has’: Former Ohio State star Emeka Egbuka is already turning heads in the NFL and he hasn’t even played in a game yet

Emeka Egbuka is the latest Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver to become a first-round pick in the NFL Draft.

Egbuka followed in the footsteps of stars like Marvin Harrison Jr., Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Garrett Wilson, and Chris Olave. Under Brian Hartline’s guidance, Ohio State has produced elite wide receiver talent at an exceptional rate.

Now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Egbuka is already making an impression—just as Buckeye Nation expected. While it’s only rookie minicamp, he’s fitting right in.

“He already has,” Bucs pass game coordinator Kefense Hynson told reporters when asked if Egbuka will make an impact in Year 1. “He has position flexibility. You know, people say ‘receiver,’ but there are really three, maybe four or even five spots, depending on how many you play with. He has the mental capacity to learn all of them—and not just learn, but actually be good at them, which I think people forget. You know, I could learn how to box, but I probably wouldn’t be very good at it.

“So he can excel at all those positions. He gives you flexibility, which makes him an awesome chess piece. You can put him on the field with other core skill guys, and now you can build a system and really get everything you want, because you have all those pieces.”

Egbuka recorded 1,011 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns last season as Ohio State’s No. 2 option behind star freshman Jeremiah Smith. It was his second 1,000-yard season, and he finished his college career as the Buckeyes’ all-time leader in receptions with 205.

Now in Tampa Bay, Egbuka will have the opportunity to learn from two of the NFL’s best in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Given the situation, there may not have been a better landing spot for him in the draft. Egbuka won’t have to be “the guy” from the start and won’t be expected to put up crazy numbers.

Expect the latest first-round Buckeye to come on gradually with Tampa Bay and become a consistent target for Baker Mayfield
