'Heupel didn't want me to do it too much' - Tennessee coach was wary of Joe Milton's signature move

Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton is best known for his rocket arm which can launch a football nearly the entire length of the field.

Milton, who was traded from the New England Patriots to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this offseason, is also known for the signature back flips he often breaks out during practices, or to celebrate a touchdown.

The former Vol was asked about the back flips on Thursday during a media session with reporters and he noted that he breaks out the back flip more often in the NFL than he did at Tennessee.

According to Milton, that's because Vols head coach Josh Heupel was a bit wary of the back flip due to the fact that Milton was UT's starting quarterback in 2023.

"Once football starts, I try to do a back flip every day," said Milton. "[It started] kinda when I got to the NFL. I did it at Tennessee, but since I was the starter, Heupel didn't want me to do it too much. But I told him, like, 'Man, I'm good, this is what I do, I'm fine, trust me'. And he was like, 'Okay'. So I kept doing it."

Milton did a backflip after Tennessee's homecoming win against UConn in 2023, but he never did one during a game in college because he was worried he would get penalized.

"If I don't get a flag and a fine, I'll do it (as a celebration in the NFL)," said Milton last year. "I wanted to do it in college, but after the USC player did it, they kinda told me that it was bad so I didn't do it."

I'm sure we'll see plenty of back flips from Milton in Dallas this summer.
