All Houston had to do was take care of lowly West Virginia at home. Instead, it got run out of the stadium in a 43-35 loss. Now there’s no margin for error over the last three games to have any hope of staying in the Big 12 title hunt.

The Cougars get TCU and a trip to Baylor to close, but first, they have to deal with a UCF team in desperate need of a win.

The Knight blew out West Virginia a few weeks ago, but they lost four of their last five, and have road games at Texas Tech and BYU to come. However, win this, and with Oklahoma State coming to Orlando, they should get to six wins and a bowl game.

Why Houston Will Win

Let’s just call the loss to West Virginia a bad day.

The Cougars were able to throw without a problem, but they uncharacteristically turned it over four times, and that was enough to be the difference in the shootout.

The other loss came to Texas Tech, when they turned it over three times. The one other super-close call was against Oregon State in overtime, and the offense gave it up once.

Those were the only three times this season when the Cougars turned it over. They’ve won relatively easily when they haven’t given the ball away.

UCF has forced two turnovers in the last four games, the offense stalled in the 30-3 loss to Baylor last week, and …

Why UCF Will Win

This is a different team in Orlando.

Granted, it helped to have played most of the mediocre teams in the Mortgage, but by far, that’s when the run defense has played its best.

Houston’s three worst days on the ground were against Texas Tech, West Virginia, and Oregon State - again, the two losses and the Oregon State win.

The Knights aren’t doing enough with the passing attack to bomb their way to a win, but they have to take advantage of a Cougar defense that doesn’t do enough to get into the backfield. But …

This is still a rebuild under Scott Frost.

It hasn’t been smooth, but UCF has been competitive in most of the losses, opportunistic in the wins, and this week, Houston won’t come up with the turnovers needed for the upset to happen.

The Cougars will bounce back fast from the uncharacteristic performance against the Mountaineers. The focus will be there this time around.
