How Alabama is dividing snaps among quarterbacks

Alabama football’s quarterback competition is still ongoing after five practices in fall camp.

Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell are still competing for the starting quarterback role. While Ty Simpson has led the quarterbacks through drills in the early part of fall camp, each quarterback continues to get reps with the Tide’s first-team offense, per Alabama’s offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb.

“Right now, we’re keeping status quo,” Grubb said. “All guys are getting the ones, twos and threes with the exception of Ty. He’s the only guy that is not taking any three reps. It really has been status quo. Today, everybody got a couple of reps with the ones. Ty took a couple of with the twos. So, we’re still moving them around. The guys know that. There is a pretty clean picture moving forward throughout the week.”

Growth continues to happen within the Tide’s quarterback room. Grubb has monitored this growth throughout the spring and during the early part of fall camp.

“They’ve grown a ton,” Grubb told reporters. “Spring to now, even first practice to now, has been outstanding. I thought a couple of the young guys hit a couple bumps early on, and I really thought they played through it really quickly. Sometimes, you’ll hit that and they’ll stay down on the canvas. They can’t get back up, but I thought both the guys did a great job, Keelon and Austin playing through that. We’ve had a lot less up and down with the whole room. I think that we’ve done a good job taking care of football again today, there’s no picks, and I really didn’t feel like the ball was in jeopardy today, and I think that’s one of the biggest things is just improved decision making in the room.”

Alabama football is expected to continue to evaluate each quarterback with the competition still ongoing.
