The Florida Gators hired head football coach Billy Napier on Nov. 28, 2021.
Napier initially signed a seven-year contract with the Gators worth $51.8 million. After a successful four-year stint with the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, Napier hasn't lived up to the hype at Florida.
The Gators have lost 19 games over the last three seasons and are off to a 1-1 start this year. You can argue that Napier was already on the hot seat entering the 2025 season but the stunning loss to USF in Week 1 intensified those beliefs. With a firing looming, many college football fans are curious about Napier's buyout at Florida.
If Napier is fired without cause, he is owed 85% of his current remaining contract, which would be $19.38 million after this season, according to CBS Sports. Within 30 days of the firing, Florida would have to pay Napier 50% of his buyout.
Although Napier has a strong recruiting and play-calling reputation, he didn't have coaching experience at the Power Four level. Unfortunately for the Gators, the schedule doesn't get any more favorable. Florida's next three games are against the No. 3 LSU Tigers, No. 5 Miami Hurricanes and No. 7 Texas Longhorns.
With a 20-20 overall record at Florida, Napier's firing looks to be a when rather than an if.
