How Much Slack Does Ben Bryant Have?

MACON — The Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback battle is unique.

Why? Because the most experienced quarterback might not have that much time to prove himself worthy of being the starter. Ben Bryant is in his fourth season with the Cincinnati Bearcats and his second tenure with the program.

His previous stint was from 2018-2020, and he became a fan favorite when Desmond Ridder struggled. Fans wanted him to start.

Now, Bryant has a chance to do just that.

After playing one season at Eastern Michigan, he is back to compete with former four-star recruit—and Cincinnati native—Evan Prater. Bryant has more experience than Prater, but he could be on a short leash to prove himself as the starter.

From his one season at Eastern Michigan and one start he made with the Bearcats in 2019, it feels like Bryant has a ceiling. There's no doubt he can make plenty of winning throws, but how far can Bryant take the Bearcats this year and next year in the Big 12?

With Prater, even though he hasn't seen much playing time, it feels like there is unlimited potential for him. We know he can sling it, and we know he can make plays with his legs. Again, even though he hasn't started a game or gotten much playing time, his potential is tantalizing.

Bryant has a great chance at being named the starter, but if he struggles out of the gate, it may not be long before Evan Prater gets a shot.

The Bearcats can't make a wrong decision on their starting quarterback to start the season, but long-term, Bryant's ceiling might show he isn't the answer.
