Hugh Freeze Doesn’t Deserve Another Game at Auburn

I’m all about giving someone an extra chance to prove themselves, but there is a limit to that generosity. Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze hit that limit last night after the Tigers lost 10-3 at home to Kentucky.

Just yesterday morning I discussed how Freeze admitted to another one of his screw ups by benching quarterback Jackson Arnold in favor of Ashton Daniels. It was a last second Hail Mary that ended up landing 20-yards out-of-bounds. Daniels completed 13 of 28 passes for 108 yards and one interception during the embarrassing performance.

This was Kentucky’s first SEC win this season and its second since September 28^th of last season. The loss slipped Auburn to 1-5 in the SEC, same as they were at this point in 2024. And what was once one of the most difficult places to play in the SEC, Jordan-Hare Stadium, has basically become a guaranteed win for opponents since Freeze took over prior to the 2023 season. Amazingly, after last night the Tigers are 2-9 in SEC home games during this stretch.

This level of performance has led the fanbase to turn on Freeze, which was very evident last night:

During his post-game press conference, Freeze was asked to address the fanbase. His response won’t lessen the negativity heading his way.

“My job is to get this team ready to play and win games, and we have failed to do that this year, and it’s frustrating,” said Freeze “I still believe we’re really close… I’m frustrated too. I get it.”

“I’d love for their patience. But I understand that you’re probably not getting patience from them, because they want to see a better product on the field and so do I. So, I understand it.”

The lack of any progress by the Auburn offensive over the last three seasons has been the main failure by Freeze. He was brought in because he was thought to be an offensive-minded quarterback guru and none of that has materialized on the field.

The fact that he Auburn offense was completely shut down by Kentucky is more than enough evidence of this. In the Wildcats’ first five SEC games, the defense had allowed an average of 34.4 points. Last night the Auburn offense managed 3 points, 241 total yards, 3.0 yards per rush and had two turnovers.

Because of this, Freeze telling the fanbase that “I still believe we’re really close” rings extremely hollow. Freeze is either lying or thinks that the Auburn fanbase isn’t watching games, because no part of the Auburn offense is close to accomplishing anything positive.

Freeze was considered a quality hire by Auburn, so his lack of success comes as a surprise to many. But with only a $15.4M buyout, he shouldn’t be given the opportunity to coach the Tigers at Vanderbilt next Saturday.

Lets see if Auburn makes that decision today.
