The Auburn Tigers are off to a hot 2-0 start this season, but Hugh Freeze and his staff need to make sure they head into the toughest part of their SEC schedule healthy.
The running back room for Auburn has already taken quite a hit to begin the season through just the Baylor and Ball State victories. Damari Alston is still questionable with a shoulder injury. Durell Robinson had to have emergency surgery on his leg Sunday. Now, on Wednesday coach Freeze offered yet another alarming injury update.
Jeremiah Cobb has been dominant for Auburn through two games this year. 195 yards. Three touchdowns. 4.1 yards after contact on average so far. Cobb has been everything Auburn fans could imagine and more this season.
Unfortunately, based on what Hugh Freeze shared with A to Z Sports on Wednesday, Cobb is struggling with a broken hand once again. Cobb already had an issue with his finger when camp opened ahead of the season over a month ago. He shed the non-contact jersey related to that pretty quickly, but now the hand injury has popped up once again as he's been forced to wear a soft cast in practice this week.
Hugh Freeze said, "It's hurting him in some areas, in the receiving game, and maybe a little bit in pass pro." That's not what you want to see for the team's current feature running back. The hand injury issue obviously may limit Cobb's snap count and versatility against South Alabama this week.
Asked Auburn HC Hugh Freeze just now about his RBs...

- Damari Alston still questionable as he's not taking hits yet
- Jeremiah Cobb still playing with soft cast due to broken hand
- Omar Mabson improving on pass pro
- Alvin Henderson good in run game, likely to see action
I asked coach Freeze about his other running backs on Wednesday, and Freeze didn't try and hide anything. Damari Alston is still not taking any hits in practice, so coach Freeze acknowledged that his Tigers are going to need to see some of their young running backs step up, and fast:
"Omar [Mabson] is learning. And just watching the first period of practice this morning, [Mabson] seems to be improving his pass protection. Damari is probably the most complete because of his experience. I think the others are going to be really good in time. Damari is still questionable [this week] because we haven't let him hit anything yet. Alvin [Henderson] run-game-wise will be fine. But again, it's hard to get enough reps for all of these young guys that we're trying to get ready–particularly with all the looks we see this week. We have to be really careful what we ask them to do in this game, but we are really thin [at running back]. We've got to have some solid play out of these younger guys."
Auburn just needs to focus on emerging from the South Alabama game healthy at this point. The Tigers are favored by 25.5 points (via sports books) as of this writing, so they need to use this opportunity to get right. Give the young running backs like Omar Mabson and Alvin Henderson plenty of looks to get them more experienced if they're needed again later in the year. Call a few runs for Jackson Arnold if the team's struggling to move the ball early. Hugh Freeze just doesn't need to push it with Damari Alston or Jeremiah Cobb this week. That dynamic duo will be huge against Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Georgia, and Missouri.
