The Illinois Fighting Illini are coming off one of the best seasons in program history. They reached ten wins for the first time since 1989 and ended the season ranked 16th in the AP Poll. A big reason why the team played so well is head coach Bret Bielema. He took over the program from Lovie Smith in 2021 and has built the program up over the last four years. The school wants him to continue building. Bielema has signed a six-year extension, keeping him in Champaign through 2030-31.

It wasn’t just that Illinois had double-digit wins for the first time this century. Their Citrus Bowl win was also the first bowl game win since 2011. Furthermore, their program is churning out great NFL talent, with cornerback Devon Witherspoon recently being drafted in the top five. Bielema was no stranger to the Big Ten, having coached the Wisconsin Badgers for years. In his first three years with the program, he had two five-win seasons and an eight-win season.
However, this year showed what this program can be. While there are many top-tier programs in the Big Ten, especially after the expansion, Illinois was to show that it belongs in that conversation. On3 reports the deal will pay the head coach $7.7 million per year. This is a massive deal for a program that has been struggling for years to get back to relevance.
With the expanded College Football Playoff, programs like this one could get a chance at a national championship. We saw it with Indiana this year, and we will likely see some surprise teams every year. Regardless of whether they make the playoff, fans of this program have to be happy with the progress Bielema has made.
