Bret Bielema displayed some 4th of July fireworks of his own on Thursday, as the Illinois Football program has now added a very familiar name. Jershaun Newton, brother of former Illini great, and recent NFL draftee Johnny Newton, has now officially pledged his commitment to the University of Illinois. Of course, Jershaun follows in the footsteps of his older brother, who will surely go down as a legend forever in the eyes of Illini fans. However, a very different path may be ahead of the youngest Newton brother.

Following Newton’s commitment, the Illinois Football staff has now brought their class of 2025 ranking to 53rd overall in the nation.
In 2023, Jershaun displayed an impressive performance at quarterback for Clearwater Central Catholic. Of course, that’s quite a transition from his brother Johnny, who was a big, ruthless defensive tackle, sizing up at 6’3 and 300lbs.
Standing in at 6′ and 205 pounds, Jershaun, is considered an “ATH” according to 247 Sports. Over the course of his Junior season, the youngest Newton went off for 2,048 passing yards and 14 touchdowns through the air. Furthermore, the dual-threat gunslinger tabbed up another 1,020 yards and rushed for an additional 5 touchdowns on the ground. Certainly, a season that helped put the Clearwater Florida native on the radar for many teams, including the Illini.
Aaron Henry has recruited Jershaun to the program as a quarterback. Which, of course, appears to be the future Illini’s position of preference. Newton will join Cardinal Ritter’s (STL-MO) Carson Boyd as the two gunslingers in the class of 2025. However, the staff will have to get him on campus first, and evaluate the needs of the program. As his film shows, Jershaun is a very versatile athlete. On the defensive side of the ball, he can play most any position behind the D-line. If needed, he could be a fantastic developmental option for Illinois Football at an array of positions, including corner, nickel, and linebacker, in addition to quarterback. Which of course, gives Newton a greater opportunity to see the field, as needs arise within the program.
