Illinois Football Quarterback Commit: “I Want to Bring Championships”

Illinois Football commit Carson Boyd just raised his stock to another level. The future Illini recently put his dual-threat abilities to the test in Indianapolis while attending the Rivals Camp Series. A fantastic platform for Carson to compete amongst some of the top high school football prospects in the Midwest. Through a series of competitive 7-on-7 and skill drills, it was determined that Carson was one of the top 3 gunslingers at the event. Certainly, a fantastic start to the summer for the St. Louis native.

“My summer is going great,” said Carson. “During the spring, I’ve been running track and getting faster to prepare myself for my senior season.” Furthermore, keeping the young man’s schedule in pandemonium. However, that does not stop the grind of development for Carson. “At the Rivals camp, there was a lot of great QBs. I was fortunate enough to walk away with a golden ball due to my performance. It was great because of all the work that I put in paid off.”

Get to Know: Carson Boyd

On January 27th, 2024, Boyd pledged his commitment to Bret Bielema and the Illinois Football program. Boyd is a massive pickup for the Illini, from a priority recruiting territory in St. Louis. A 3-star recruit, Carson is one of the top 50 QBs in the nation according to 247 Sports. The young man held offers from Illinois, West Virginia, UNLV, UCF, Texas A&M, Purdue, Mizzou, Louisville, Iowa State, and GA Tech, among others.

However, for Boyd, Illinois made their presence heard the loudest. “I talked to the entire staff, mostly two or three times a week,” stated Boyd. “I usually talk to Coach Art Sitkowski and Coach Barry Lunney. The conversation with those guys goes great. Usually consisting of what my week looks like for me, and how I’ve been off the field.” Says Carson. “I chose the University of Illinois because of the coaching staff, the FamILLy environment.” This is a powerful testament to the current staff’s ability to make connections with recruits.

The Illini in waiting is passionate about his goals for the future of the Illinois Football program with himself under center. “I want to bring championships to the University of Illinois.” Said Boyd. “I wanna win the Heisman trophy, and I want to get drafted in the first round. However, as Carson states, the firepower must be in place for such a major step forward as a program. “I feel as though my skill set can get it done,” says Carson, “I just need the guys around me in order for me to make it happen.”

The Illini commit continues “Illinois football is definitely on the come up. I love what Coach B is doing with the program. Hopefully, in the next couple of years, we will have a Rose Bowl and a National Championship under our belt.”

More Fun Facts

Off the gridiron, Carson believes there is not much better than a good film in your personal time. “I love love love watching movies.” says the future Illini. However, even a good cinema is not going to keep Carson from being on the grind, even during his spare time. “I love the process of training. I train multiple times a week, and it is extremely beneficial for me and my craft,” said Carson. While training and developing, Carson looks up to a former Heisman winner to help mold his craft. “As of right now, my favorite quarterback is Bryce Young. “ Boyd states. “Due to the fact that he is a quarterback on the shorter side, but he’s extremely consistent. I feel like he’s a big play waiting to happen.”

Player Breakdown

Carson has assisted Cardinal Ritter to repeat Missouri football State Championships, as well as undefeated seasons (28 wins in 2022 and 2023).  In addition, he passed for 2,224 yards and 29 touchdowns through the air, while also rushing for 576 yards and six scores on the ground during the 2023 season.

Boyd will seemingly join a young, yet promising quarterback room with Illinois football. Donovan Leary, Trey Petty, and Cal Swanson all have impressive and unique traits as QBs. However, with no proven experience all around, the quarterback competition after Luke Altmyer will be a Wild West. Overall, Bret Bielema and Barry Lunney have increased the floor of the Illinois QB room. All players in the room have proven power-five traits with impressive futures ahead. As a result, it will be interesting who wins the job after Luke Altmyer leaves.
