Illinois land Morgan Park Wide Receiver Tysean Griffin

Offensive coordinator Barry Lunney, Jr. has his lab coat, beakers, bunsen burners, and he is in the lab with the wide receivers coming to Champaign. The 2024 Illinois receiver room includes Malik Elzy, Carlos Orr, and Kenari Wilcher. Now, the receiver room includes Tysean Griffin. The Morgan Park High School product did a little of everything for the Mustangs during his high school career, so it will be interesting to see how he’s used at Illinois. He split time between running back, slot receiver, and quarterback his last two seasons in high school.

The Illini win another Power Five recruiting battle

Griffin was a much- sought after recruit. The Illini beat out the likes of Arkansas, Boston College, Cincinnati, Kansas State, and Kansas. In addition, Illinois beat out conference rivals Wisconsin, Purdue, and Michigan State for Griffin’s services. In addition to Griffin, Kaden Feagin, Brandon Henderson, and Jojo Hayden are players from the class of 2023 with multiple Power Five offers. Eddie Tuerk, Demetrius John, and Easton Baker are players in the 2024 class with multiple Power Five offers. As a result, the Illini are generating a more talented roster.

What it means for Illinois

Bielema and his coaching/recruiting staff are making significant headway in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Specifically, they are gaining traction with Chicago Public League football. The Illini signed top CPL prospect Malik Elzy as part of its 2023 class. Though Griffin is not the top recruit in the CPL in 2024, the Illinois recruiting staff is making a concerted effort to recruit players from the city of Chicago.

On the field

In addition to the recruiting progress, Griffin is a prospect that can make slot receiver a continued strength of the team. Isaiah Williams, Jr., the current slot receiver, is slated to have a big year. If he moves on, Griffin, Hank Beatty, and Kenari Wilcher are three talented prospects in the pipeline for the position.
