Immediate Thoughts Following Texas’s 38-7 Victory Over San Jose State

The No. 7-ranked Texas Longhorns emerged victorious against the San Jose State Spartans, as expected. Although there are still many issues that need to be addressed.

Here are some immediate thoughts about the Longhorns following the win:

– Parker Livingstone looks like he’ll be WR1 for the Longhorns following his impressive performances against San Jose State and Ohio State. He did have one play get called back due to holding, and he has a few things he could clean up on.

– Aside from Livingstone, there were some good performances on the receiving side of things, like Jack Endries’. However, there was a major issue with drops during the game. Arch Manning did have some occasional mistakes, but for the most part, he was accurate. For whatever reason, there were plenty of times when the ball hit the receivers’ hands, but no catch was made.

– Penalties are a major topic of conversation again. Many plays, like last week, were called back when they truly mattered, all because of undisciplined and stupid penalties. Texas finished with 12 penalties for 115 yards, which is not acceptable.

– Overall, the offense just doesn’t look like it’s quite there. Sluggish, lost, and incapable are words that could describe the offensive performance at times today. There were good moments, definitely. But there were plenty of bad, too.

– The offensive line is going to have to imrpove. Manning seemed more comfortable in the pocket for the majority of the game, but there were many times when the pocket broke down and the Spartans got pressure on Manning. If that doesn’t improve soon, then Texas might be in trouble when it comes time to face Florida in The Swamp in three weeks.

– Arch Manning still has work to do. He looked way better today than he did last week, yet there were still mistakes. Issues with inaccuracy, mechanics, and decision-making are still going to be a conversation that has to be had. Open receivers were still missed occasionally, he wouldn’t set his feet to throw sometimes, and bad decisions led to bad things, like the interception.

Texas will have to ensure that this all gets addressed and improved upon over the next couple of weeks, or else the Longhorns are gonna be in for a rough ride once they begin conference play.
