Curt Cignetti has been so good for Indiana's football program that he has already received a raise.
Cignetti, 63, agreed to become Indiana's head coach after spending five seasons at James Madison. He left the Dukes with an impressive 52-9 record. Some fans were wondering if he was simply feasting on weaker competition. It didn't take long to find out that he's simply a great football coach.
In just his first year in Bloomington, Cignetti has Indiana at 10-0. If the College Football Playoff started today, the Hoosiers would make the 12-team field. That's how impactful the veteran coach has been.
On Saturday, Indiana rewarded Cignetti with a contract extension that includes a "significant increase in pay," per ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Indiana has said that Cignetti's new deal will pay him an average salary of $8 million. He also received a $1 million retention bonus.
"I am beyond appreciative for the tremendous commitment, confidence, and support from President Pam Whitten and Athletic Director Scott Dolson," Cignetti said in a statement. "Manette and I love Bloomington and are grateful for how the IU community has embraced us. I look forward to leading this outstanding program and doing my part to continue the momentum for Hoosier football."
Cignetti's new deal with the Hoosiers will run through Nov. 30, 2032.
"Coach Cignetti exemplifies IU's goal to win in all that we do," Indiana president Pamela Whitten. "The success he has brought to Indiana football is shining a light on all that is amazing about Indiana University. We are excited that Coach Cignetti and his wonderful family will be a part of the Hoosier Nation for many years to come."
If Cignetti leads Indiana to a victory over Ohio State next Saturday, he may just ask for a second raise.
Indiana and Ohio State will square off at 12 p.m. ET on Nov. 23.
