Injuries Knock West Virginia RB Diore Hubbard Out of Game
Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK

West Virginia running back Diore Hubbard left Saturday’s game against Colorado in the first quarter after suffering an injury and did not return. Hubbard was seen heading to the locker room following the early exit, and while no official update has been given, it’s a troubling development for a Mountaineers offense already thin at the position.

Hubbard has been a bright spot in a backfield riddled with injuries this season. After earning a bigger role in recent weeks, including a breakout performance with 108 rushing yards against Houston, the redshirt freshman had climbed into the conversation as the most reliable option in the room. Now his status is uncertain, and the Mountaineers are once again facing depth concerns at a position that has struggled to stay healthy all year.

Hubbard came to Morgantown as a former Ohio Mr. Football and has steadily earned his way into the rotation. At six feet and 215 pounds, he brings physicality to the run game and has shown good vision between the tackles. His presence has been especially valuable given the revolving door of injuries that have hit the Mountaineers’ backfield over the past month. Losing him now could stunt both his development and the offense’s ability to maintain any kind of rhythm.

If Hubbard is out for an extended stretch, West Virginia will likely turn to true freshmen or unproven options to pick up the slack. That’s a tough ask in a league that features some of the most aggressive front sevens in the country. The Mountaineers need answers, and fast. Whether that comes from a quick recovery or a new face stepping up, the margin for error in the Big 12 is getting slimmer by the week.

More updates on Hubbard’s injury are expected soon, but until then, West Virginia fans are left hoping for the best. One of their most promising young players just went down, and the timing could not be worse.
