The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made the move following the 2025 NFL draft to sign former Colorado Buffaloes' safety Shilo Sanders as an undrafted free agent. While he was not picked during the draft, some believe that Sanders has a chance to make the roster and become an impact player at the NFL level.

Sanders received a three-year, $2.965 million contract. Some fans felt that the deal showed the Buccaneers' belief in Sanders being more than a normal undrafted free agent. However, that is not the case.

One NFL insider, Greg Auman of Fox Sports, sent a reality check message about Sanders and the deal that he received from Tampa Bay.

"Shilo Sanders signed the same deal nearly all NFL undrafted rookies sign — three years at league-minimum salaries… there’s little assurance of anything in terms of job security," Auman wrote.

He's being given the same opportunity that other undrafted free agents get. The Buccaneers are not giving any hints about what they think he can do in the future,

Being the son of Deion Sanders comes with a lot of pressure. Both Shilo and Shedeur Sanders have been dealing with that pressure throughout the draft process and the draft itself.

Of course, Shedeur went through a brutal slide in the draft. He was originally expected to be a first or second-round pick, but was not taken until the fifth round at No. 144 overall.

As for Shilo, he is coming off of a solid college career. He was overshadowed by his brother, but has a solid track record of solid safety play.

Throughout his college career, two years at South Carolina and two years at Colorado, Sanders played in 34 total games. He racked up 170 tackles to go along with a sack, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, an interception, two defensive touchdowns, and six defended passes.

While he may not be guaranteed anything with the contract he received, Sanders has received praise from Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles.

“I think he’s a good football player,” Bowles said. “He’s a heck of a tackler and he knows the game very well; he can see the game very well. So giving him a chance to play, we think he has a shot to help us from a safety standpoint and from a special teams standpoint. So I’m excited to get him in here and see how he moves. I saw him tackle all year. I saw him make plays. He’s a very smart player and he understands the game very well. So we thought it was worth a shot to see what he can do. And I think he’ll show himself well.”
