Iowa fans wish a cheerful goodbye to inept OC Brian Ferentz

Brian Ferentz wasn't always a disaster as offensive coordinator at Iowa, but these past two years have highlighted that he was not the man for the job — despite his last name.

If any other Power Five offensive coordinators had averaged second-to-last in yards per game — as Iowa did in 2022 — they wouldn't have been brought back. Iowa averaged 251.6 yards per game last season, which was 130th out of 131 in college football.

Brian Ferentz was brought back for 2023, though, likely because his father is head coach Kirk Ferentz.

Yes, he lost money and was given a contractual stipulation to score at least 25 points per game in 2023, but the fact that he was even asked back after his historic ineptitude was truly shocking.

To no one's surprise, things weren't much better in 2023. Iowa finished dead last in offensive yards per game with just 239.3. The Hawkeyes got 12 yards worse per game on offense.

Midway through the season, it was announced that Brian wouldn't be retained for the next season, but his ineptitude followed him and the Hawkeyes to the very end. Iowa lost to Michigan in the Big Ten Championship, 26-0, and then followed that up in the Citrus Bowl with a 35-0 loss to Tennessee.

It was a fitting final chapter for one of the worst offensive coordinators of all time, and Iowa fans were more than happy to wish him goodbye on social media.

Brian was an offensive lineman under his father at Iowa from 2001 to 2005. He started his coaching career as the New England Patriots offensive quality control coach in 2008 and was promoted to tight ends coach in 2011. He joined his father at Iowa as the Hawkeyes' offensive line coach in 2012 and became Iowa's offensive coordinator in 2017.
