Iowa OC Brian Ferentz's contract amended after poor season

This is probably the lowest of lows for Iowa Hawkeyes offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz.

If watching his offense notch just 251.6 yards per game while scoring only 17.7 points per game in 2022 wasn't the ground floor, having his contract amended so that he makes less money and must meet offensive-minded incentives next season surely is rock bottom.

That's going to be the case for Ferentz, though, at least according to reports coming out of Iowa City.

"In the new contract, Ferentz will make a base salary of $850K and will be able to have his contract reinstated to a two-year rolling agreement with a bonus and salary adjustment if the team meets certain requirements. The team needs to score at least 25 points per game and win a minimum of seven games in 2023 for Ferentz to hit his goals," ESPN reported.

Ferentz was supposed to make $900K in 2023, so he'll be missing out on $50K of his base salary. With that said, he can receive up to $112,500 in incentive money if he hits his goals, so Iowa has given him the chance to make it up.

It's notable that Ferentz is the son of head coach Kirk Ferentz, who has been in charge of Iowa football since 1999.

"The thing I'm most focused on would be the points because that is what counts," Ferentz recently told the media while speaking about Iowa's offense moving forward, per ESPN. "Obviously everything you do offensively goes into that. I look back, we've had years like this and it's not much fun, certainly. To win eight games, that's no easy trick when you score 17.8 a game — that's not easy. But I'm optimistic. I think I know the causes, as I've covered, for our challenges this year, and we've taken steps already in terms of addressing it."

Brian Ferentz has been Iowa's offensive coordinator since 2017. His offenses averaged 29.1 points per game over his first four seasons but have severely dipped over the past two seasons.

Iowa averaged 23.4 points per game in 2021 and the 17.7 points per game in 2022 was ranked 123 out of 131 schools nationally.
