In a tragic update from Iowa State University, football video production specialist Alex Ernest passed away on Sunday in a car crash.

Ernst worked with the program for nearly two decades, receiving his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Ames while helping bolster Iowa State’s football program.

“We are devastated by the tragic passing of Alex Ernst,” Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard said. “For nearly 20 years behind the scenes, first as a student and then as a full-time employee, Alex was an unsung hero who played an important role in our department’s success through his outstanding work in video operations. Everyone in the ISU Athletics Department family is keeping Alex’s loved ones and friends in their thoughts and prayers, as well as the other individuals lost in this terrible accident.”

Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell echoed Pollard’s statement, saying, “We are heartbroken by this news. Alex was an important and valued member of our football family and had a special relationship with so many in our program. He was exceptional at his job and took great pride in what he did. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragedy.”

“Ernst wasn’t always the ra-ra guy, but he was always present,” Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht wrote on X. “Loved his job and loved the players. I know that I will always appreciate him for putting a smile on my face whenever he told me to ‘play better.’ I was blessed to have been able to know you! Love ya, Ernst.”

According to his obituary, a memorial fund has been established to support causes that remained close to Ernst’s heart.
