Jack Sawyer makes strong statement on how the Michigan game isn’t the most important one for the Ohio State Buckeyes

The season could very well have been over for the Ohio State Buckeyes last year when they fell to Michigan once again.

Instead, the Buckeyes went on one of the most impressive runs college football has ever seen and captured a national title. Ryan Day became just the third active college football head coach to win a National Championship.

Despite that accomplishment, Ohio State continues to struggle with the hurdle of beating Michigan. After dominating the rivalry during the Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer eras, the Buckeyes have now lost to the Wolverines four straight times.

Now, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Jack Sawyer has made a bold statement about The Game during an appearance on Ben Roethlisberger’s Footbahlin podcast:

“Obviously, The Game is still gonna be The Game, because it is The Game — the best rivalry in the sport,” Sawyer said. “But at the end of the day, I think you’d be crazy to say you’d rather beat them and not win a National Championship instead of win a National Championship and not beat them. In a perfect world, you do both, but obviously we didn’t. But winning a National Championship kind of erases all of that. For me, it does at least.”

Sawyer is the embodiment of a Buckeye football player. A lifelong Ohio State fan, he was an easy recruitment despite being a five-star national prospect. The Steelers selected the Columbus-area native in the fourth round of the draft, and he now joins a talented edge group that includes T.J. Watt.

Last season, Sawyer recorded nine sacks for the Buckeyes, but once again came up short against Michigan. It’s something this senior class had to come to terms with — they never beat Michigan. But winning it all meant much more. It was a grander stage, and Ohio State took care of business there.
