The Ole Miss Rebels (3-0) have kicked off their 2024 season on a high note, quickly emerging as a serious contender not just for the College Football Playoff, but for the National Championship as well.
So far, the Rebels have dominated their opponents, outscoring them 168 to 9 over the first three games. During an appearance on ESPN's College Football Live Thursday night, Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart lavished praise on his head coach, Lane Kiffin.
Dart likened head coach Lane Kiffin to Yoda. But what does he mean by that?
“I just think he’s an offensive mastermind. You know, just the things that he can put together. How smart he is schematically. You can ask anybody around the college football landscape. And they would all say that Coach Kiffin is one of the if not the smartest offensive mind in college football.
From my experience, you know, just learning from him. Just an amazing experience being his quarterback. Just trying to be a sponge and take in all of it."
Kiffin began his coaching journey at Fresno State, his alma mater, before joining the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars as a quality control coach. However, Kiffin gained real prominence as an assistant coach at USC, under Pete Carroll, where he was part of a powerhouse program in the mid-2000s.
In 2007, Kiffin became the youngest head coach in NFL history at the time, taking over the Oakland Raiders at just 31. His tenure was short-lived, and he was fired after less than two seasons.
Kiffin returned to college football, taking the head coaching job at the University of Tennessee in 2009. After one season, he left to return to USC as head coach, a move that generated controversy.
His tenure at USC ended abruptly in 2013 after a series of underwhelming seasons. He bounced back, however, as Alabama’s offensive coordinator, where he helped the Crimson Tide win a national championship in 2015.
In 2016, Kiffin became the head coach at Florida Atlantic, revitalizing the program with two conference championships. Currently, he is the head coach at Ole Miss, continuing to build his reputation as an offensive innovator.
Ole Miss aims to maintain their momentum when they go head-to-head with Georgia Southern this Saturday. The game is scheduled for 7:45 PM EST and will be broadcast nationwide on the SEC Network.
