Jaydon Blue is one of the fastest running backs in this year’s draft class, and his scouting report looks at how well his speed and the rest of his skill set might translate to the NFL.
Height- 5’9″
Weight- 196 lbs
Blue was a highly sought-after four-star running back recruit from Klein Cain High School in Texas. He was a 2022 All-American Bowl participant and the No. 6 ranked running back prospect in the 2022 recruiting class. Blue committed to Texas and played in nine games as a freshman. He saw an increase in play time his sophomore season, rushing for nearly 400 yards in 14 games and scoring four total touchdowns. As a junior, Blue became a big part of the Texas offense, leading the team in total touchdowns and finishing second on the team in total yards with 1,098 yards from scrimmage.
Blue is a great receiving threat out of the backfield. He caught 42 passes in 2024, but he is not just a good safety valve option. He can make big plays downfield as a receiver. Blue is a smooth route runner and runs extremely effective wheel routes and Texas routes out of the backfield. He tracks the ball well down the field, and once he catches the ball, he can quickly turn back into a runner, accelerate, and pick up yards after the catch.
Blue is a dynamic runner with elite speed. He ran the second-fastest running back 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine with a 4.38 time and has amazing breakaway speed to pull away from defenders. Blue is at his best as a runner in open space. He makes quick and sharp cuts and is adept at forcing missed tackles in one-on-one situations. Blue is a younger, low-mileage running back prospect with just 214 career carries in college.
Blue is a small running back standing just 5-foot-9 and weighing 196 pounds. He doesn’t run strong enough to be a great runner between the tackles and lacks power and balance. Blue is not a strong finisher and goes down too easily on first contact. Blue can also be susceptible to going down on low hits and getting tripped up in the open field. He shows flashes of great vision but needs to become more consistent and patient.
Blue has some serious ball security concerns. He had four fumbles on just 134 carries in 2024 and often holds the ball too loosely and low to the ground. While Blue is a dynamic receiver, he needs to be a more reliable and sure-handed receiver. Blue has struggled with some concentration drops. In pass protection, Blue needs to become more consistent in processing, and his lack of size and strength shows at times.
Blue’s speed and receiving ability are good enough for him to get on the field and add value to an NFL team. However, Blue will have to cut down on the fumbles in the NFL. To earn a healthy amount of touches on the ground, he will need to improve his strength as a runner and become a bigger threat between the tackles. Blue projects as an RB3, possibly an RB2 in the NFL, who can be a dynamic change of pace back with a good amount of production as a receiver out of the backfield.
