The head coaching carousel creates many interesting stories and situations. It also creates fantastic situations for certain people. While more of the talk is about Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss, no head coach is in a better situation right now than Louisville’s Jeff Brohm.

Brohm is a proven winner. He was in Western Kentucky, he was at Purdue, and now he is at his alma mater, No. 24 Louisville (5-1). He has compiled a 90-53 record during his 12-year career. So now, at 54 years old, as the coaching carousel spins faster and faster, Brohm has a luxury seat.

Immediately after beating No. 2 Miami in Coral Gables on Friday night, Brohm’s name suddenly became a hot topic. But it shouldn’t have taken a victory over the Canes to accomplish this. As mentioned, he is a proven winner. And he has done it against elite competition.

While he is 11-16 against Top 25 teams and 4-7 against the Top 10, he is an amazing 4-0 against Top 5 teams. Before the victory over Miami, with Purdue he beat No. 2 Ohio State in 2018 and then in 2021 he beat both No. 2 Iowa and No. 3 Michigan State.

Now as he prepares for the remaining six games of the regular season, four of which are home and all of are against unranked teams, Brohm is extremely comfortable. However, there is a good chance that this changes. His comfort may become a bit unsettled if these rumors of Florida, Penn State, etc. being interested in him starts to become a hot topic around the program.

There are a couple of ways that this can be handled. Media speculation linking Brohm to other jobs isn’t something that will go away on its own. Louisville needs make it stop. In December 2022, Brohm signed a six-year, $35 million contract, which is loaded with incentives and automatic extensions based on the team’s success. The Cardinals will need to do even better.

I don’t believe that Brohm wants to leave, but he is making $5.98 million this season. Just a few of the coaches who are making more than Brohm this season are on the hot seat, such as Hugh Freeze at Auburn ($6.73M), Mark Stoops at Kentucky ($9.01M), Luke Fickell at Wisconsin ($7.7M) and Jonathan Smith at Michigan State ($7.35M). Brohm is deserving of more and should get it soon.

Once he does, which I do believe will happen, then everyone around Louisville can truly feel comfortable. But until that point, it will be a bit chaotic for the Cardinals.
