It's been about five months since Ohio State defeated Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff national title game. But one ex-Notre Dame player had a claim about the game that has fans fuming and Buckeyes superstar Jeremiah Smith laughing.
Taking to X over the weekend, former Notre Dame running back and Super Bowl champion Jonas Gray shared a post about Fighting Irish cornerback Leonard Moore, who ranks among the top corners in the country heading into 2025. Gray poked the bear by staying that Moore "strapped up" Smith in the national title game.
"He actually strapped up Jeremiah Smith in the Natty, but people aren’t ready to have that conversation yet," Gray wrote.
Gray was swiftly crushed by the replies, with just about everyone pointing out that Smith had five receptions for 88 yards and a crucial touchdown.
The statement seemed so outlandish that even Smith got in on the fun. He reposted Gray's message with a two-word reply.
"Yea ok," Smith wrote back, adding a laughing emoji.

Gray tried to save face by giving credit to quarterback Will Howard for the game-winner while pointing out that only two catches for eight yards came against Smith.
"I get it—we lost, so it doesn’t really matter. He’s a great player and Ohio State are national champs. But honestly, it was Will Howard’s timely runs that really killed us. We clawed back in, and I know for a fact the fan base was getting nervous. That’s why y’all keep saying he “iced the game” with a 56-yard catch that wasn’t even on Leonard Moore."
"I said Leonard Moore strapped him. Not ND. On Leonard Moore he had 2 catches for 8 yards," he replied to another user.
As for Leonard Moore, there's certainly a lot to be excited for among Notre Dame fans in 2025. As a freshman last season he played in all 16 games and finished the year with 48 tackles, two interceptions and 11 passes defended.
But as Jeremiah Smith seems to have proved in the national title game, having a great cornerback doesn't help if the elite wide receiver simply moves to another defender.
