Jim Harbaugh set to get over $11 million contract extension from Michigan, raises question mark over his possible NFL tenure
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh‘s name is at the top of a couple of teams’ head coach candidates list in this season’s head coach hiring cycle. Harbaugh’s name has been thrown around a lot during the last two head coach hiring cycles in the NFL. However, this year, the Wolverines don’t want to be part of Harbaugh’s game as they want a full commitment from him.

According to multiple reports, the Wolverines’ front office is working on a contract extension with their HC Jim Harbaugh. They are set to offer Harbaugh a 5-year contract worth more than $11 million per year. That is a huge money for a college football head coach. In fact, that will make Harbaugh one of the top two highest-paid collegiate coaches.

Currently, Alabama’s Nick Saban is the highest-paid coach with a $11.4 million per year contract according to Front Office Sports. There’s a high possibility Harbaugh could overtake Saban’s pay grade with his new contract per reports.

However, Michigan expects full commitment from Harbaugh as they want a written statement from their veteran head coach that he will not pursue any potential NFL job offers during the upcoming hiring cycle.

So, the contract talks are still ongoing and Harbaugh has a tough choice to make in the upcoming months. He is reportedly attracting a lot of interest from the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders. Harbaugh had a successful run as the NFL head coach during his stint with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014.

Harbaugh has also seen a lot of success while coaching the Wolverines from 2015. He has led Michigan to three consecutive Big 10 titles and has an overall record of 82 wins and 25 losses during his tenure in Ann Arbor.

Jim Harbaugh chasing first National Championship title with Michigan

The Michigan Wolverines have been through a lot this season after being involved in a sign-stealing saga allegedly spearheaded by their analyst Connor Stalions. But, their future could be better as they are looking to secure their first CFP championship since 1997.

Harbaugh was suspended from the sidelines for 3 games while the NCAA continues to investigate the allegations. But now, he would be able to coach his team from the sidelines during the playoffs.

The No.1 ranked Wolverines are scheduled to take on the No.4 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in their semifinal on New Year’s Day. Bama is certainly a tough matchup for Jim Harbaugh and his team, but they would look to make a statement by defeating them in the decisive Rose Bowl game.
