Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has addressed the recent attention surrounding Venmo transactions linked to his account that referenced “sports gambling,” saying in a public statement that he has never engaged in betting on sports.

The statement, posted to his social media accounts Tuesday, comes after screenshots of the transactions circulated online and prompted an internal review by OU officials.

“I want to make it clear that I have never participated in sports gambling,” Mateer wrote. “Some Venmo payment descriptions have been taken out of context and do not reflect any gambling activity. I take NCAA rules seriously and would never jeopardize my eligibility or my team.”

ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported Monday night that Oklahoma’s compliance department was aware of the transactions and was gathering information. According to the report, two Venmo payments included the phrase “sports gambling,” with one referencing a specific game. Mateer has denied any involvement in betting and said the payment descriptions were jokes between friends.

The NCAA prohibits all student-athletes from betting on any sports, college or professional, and even the appearance of wagering can lead to scrutiny. Several programs across the country have dealt with gambling-related investigations in the past two years, making compliance offices particularly alert to potential violations.

Mateer, a reserve quarterback entering his second season with the Sooners, said he is cooperating fully with the review and wants to focus on preparing for the upcoming season. “I love this game and my team, and I would never do anything to hurt either,” his statement read.

Oklahoma has not released a public comment on the matter, and no decision on discipline has been announced. The Sooners open their season on August 30 against Temple.
