The quarterback battle at Colorado Buffaloes has taken another intriguing turn. A prominent analyst recently questioned whether highly touted freshman Julian Lewis will actually win the starting job this season. In a recent YouTube video from BuffsNationDaily, host Max shared his skepticism about Lewis locking down the QB1 role.

Despite the hype surrounding the five-star recruit, Max suggested the competition might still be wide open in camp. “I’m not so convinced that Juju is going to be the quarterback,” Max said in the video. “It could be number 16. It could be number 16. He’s a lot bigger as well.”

The comment immediately sparked discussion among Colorado fans, particularly because Lewis arrived in Boulder with significant expectations.

As one of the most talked-about quarterback recruits in the 2025 class, many believed the freshman had a strong chance of starting early in his college career under head coach Deion Sanders. However, Max believes the battle remains unresolved. “Like I said, I’m not convinced that they have their starting quarterback yet,” he continued.

The analyst also referenced Sanders’ own recent remarks about Lewis’ development during camp. When asked about the freshman quarterback, Sanders reportedly used a familiar phrase he has used before to describe players still finding their footing.

According to Max, Sanders responded to questions about Lewis by saying, “He coming around the mountain when he comes. This phrase Deion previously used as well, while evaluating players who were still adjusting to the system.

While the comment does not necessarily rule Lewis out of the starting role, it does suggest the coaching staff believes there is still progress to be made.

Meanwhile, Max pointed to Colorado’s No.16 as a potential challenger in the competition, noting the quarterback’s physical profile.

“He’s a lot bigger as well,” Max said, adding that the player even resembles his brother, who previously played for the New York Jets.

As preseason practices continue, the quarterback situation remains one of the biggest storylines surrounding the Buffaloes. Sanders has consistently emphasized competition throughout his roster, and the quarterback room appears to be no exception.

For now, Lewis’ status as the presumed starter may not be as secure as many initially believed. With camp still underway and multiple quarterbacks competing for the role, Colorado’s eventual QB1 could ultimately be decided much closer to the start of the season.
