Kalen DeBoer knew the right strings to pull and when to unleash the big dogs when it came to recruiting Ezavier Crowell. The elite five-star running back from Jackson, Alabama, was entertaining offers from Texas, Auburn, Florida, and Georgia, but it was Alabama that had the edge in the end.

All DeBoer had to do was bring in legendary head coach Nick Saban to seal the deal. Crowell admitted that Alabama simply had to confirm what he always wanted all along.

“Alabama is Alabama,” Crowell said. “Since growing up, I’ve been watching them and felt like I wanted to be a part of it. I got the offer my freshman year and really knew I was going there. It’s just a dream come true, committing to the University of Alabama. I’m just living out my dream.”

Crowell added he was nervous to meet Saban last weekend while on his final visit, but he heard Saban's message loud and clear.

“Just about the best kids in state stay in state,” Crowell said Saban told him.

The highest-rated in-state running back recruit since 2014, Crowell has earned the moniker as the "most important commitment of the DeBoer era." His coaches rave about him being a "complete back" at 5-foot-11 and 215 pounds.

“If you create a player, that’s the one you create,” head coach Cody Flournoy said.

Running for 1,964 yards, 31 touchdowns, and carrying his team to a state title in 2024, Crowell has the resume of being the next elite Alabama star. Such a presence is lacking on the current Tide roster, and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb will need to feed Crowell a ton when he's on campus.

Here's Cooper Petagna's scouting report from 247Sports:

One of the state of Alabama's most productive rushers over the last two years, opted to reclassify from the Class of 2027 to 2026 after his sophomore season at Jackson High School. Estimated north of 200-pounds, the Yellowhammer native exhibits the ability to play in both a zone or power scheme at the next level as he possesses the short area speed and acceleration to consistently get to the edge on Friday nights. A shifty mover with good short area quickness and change of direction ability, the Top247 standout flashes the ability to make the first defender miss in a multitude of ways, displaying a rare blend of elusiveness and contact balance that makes him difficult to bring down in the open field. Once at the second and third level, Crowell’s make you miss ability combined with his top end speed make him a home run threat from anywhere on the field. Projects as a high level impact starter at the Power Four level that will more than likely need a developmental year to acclimate to speed and physicality of the collegiate game due to his reclassification.
