Kalen DeBoer addresses Alabama football’s kicking competition
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

On Thursday, Alabama head football coach Kalen DeBoer spoke to reporters about the kicking competition between Conor Talty and Lorcan Quinn.

DeBoer said it is “a battle” when referring to the competition between kickers, but he means it “in a good way” because both Talty and Quinn are doing well in fall camp.

“Both of them I think are very talented, and I think Conor’s really built a lot of momentum through the offseason, especially since this summer,” DeBoer said. “Lorcan, you can see what he’s got as far as leg strength, whether it’s field goals, kickoffs and just maturity. He responds and battles back. There’s going to be adversity, and you’re not going to be perfect as a kicker, so a lot of it is like what’s the next kick look like? What’s your response going to be? It’s a strong competition right now. It’s a battle, and I mean that in a good way because they are both kicking very well.”

Talty started at kicker for the Crimson Tide throughout the 2025 season, and he had his fair share of ups and downs. He finished the season 16-of-23 on field goals, with a long of 48 yards. Quinn transferred to Alabama from Marshall. The transfer nailed 21 of his 26 field goals last season. Quinn was named to the preseason Lou Groza Award watch list two weeks ago.

Both Talty and Quinn rotated at kicker for Alabama football on A-Day. It sounds like both Talty and Quinn received equal reps in Alabama’s second scrimmage of fall camp, but DeBoer and the Crimson Tide have not chosen a starting kicker yet.

Alabama will open the 2026 season at home against East Carolina on Sept. 5.
