Kalen DeBoer adds top dynamic playmaker that Alabama has been severely lacking after the Caleb Odom debacle

Kalen DeBoer scored another big recruiting win this week after picking up five-star running back Ezavier Crowell. Alabama scored a key commitment from four-star tight end Mark Sutter, who is the top prospect in Illinois.

Sutter opted for the Tide over Ohio State, Penn State, and Illinois. He's the nation's No. 80 overall player and sixth-best tight end in the country. At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, he's ideally built to play early in his career.

The Crimson Tide have been yearning for an elite playmaker at tight end, which is what led them to pursue Caleb Odom in the 2024 class. But Odom didn't stick at tight end, and the former four-star didn't stay at Alabama. He's now a receiver at Ole Miss.

"Thank you to all the coaches who have believed in me and put there [sic} efforts into me," Sutter said in X. "To everyone who has supported me and helped me on my journey, thank you. I am so fortunate to be in this position and I am ready for the future! Let's do it!!!!!"

Like most high schoolers, Sutter has experience doing a little bit of everything. He caught 35 passes for 505 yards and seven touchdowns, but added a few carries and throws as well. He's a legit defender, too, registering 36 tackles and six sacks.

But his goal at Alabama is clear.

“Like the best overall tight end you can think of, that’s what I want to be," Sutter said.

He was effusive in his praise of Alabama, who had been chasing him for over a year. DeBoer hasn't had a dynamic tight end in several years, even beyond his days at Alabama.

“Everywhere I went on this visit, I felt like a big priority,” Sutter told On3 after the visit. “They really showed me that I am a guy they need, that they care about me and that I am pretty big in what they are trying to do. That felt good to me.”

It wasn't an easy recruitment, though. The Big Ten badly wanted Sutter, and his dad played linebacker for Northwestern before landing in the NFL for six years. One of his other siblings is also a Cleveland Browns employee, so the Midwest is familiar to his family.

Now, though, the South is also home to the Sutter family.
