Kicker Conor Talty missed a 28-yard field goal in Alabama’s game against Eastern Illinois, and the fans in Bryant-Denny Stadium booed Talty as he walked to the sideline.
The fans booed Talty on each of his PATs following the missed field goal. Talty made the extra points despite being booed, and the fans cheered louder than usual when he made those kicks.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer said that he wants everyone to support Talty, and he shared that the kicker had a great week of practice leading up to this game.
“I wished they’d have [his] back like I know our locker room has his back,” DeBoer said. “He’s trying. He’s working hard, and he had a great week in practice. I don’t think he missed one all week, and we put him all over the place. So, he’s gonna keep plugging away, and just want everyone to support him. He’s just like every other player on our football team, giving everything he has.”
DeBoer wants everyone to support Talty, but the fans are getting angry because misses are piling up. It’s not like he is attempting a 50-yarder each week. His last two misses came from 26 yards and 28 yards away.
Kicker Peter Notaro made a few kicks in today’s game as the Crimson Tide coaching staff subbed him in to kick an extra point. It does not sound like there will be a change made at kicker for the Iron Bowl, but the Alabama fans will not let Talty or DeBoer hear the end of it if he misses a critical field goal against Auburn next week.
