Quarterback Stetson Bennett IV had doubters when he took over the Georgia offense last season. Then the ex-walk-on led the Dawgs to a national title. Now he has Georgia knocking on the door to repeat.
Kentucky defensive coordinator Brad White believes Bennett isn't being taken seriously in the 2022 Heisman Trophy race and might take it out on his Wildcats, who host No. 1 Georgia on Saturday.
“Bennett is playing at an extremely high level right now," White said, per UGAsports.com. "Surprised he doesn’t have some Heisman buzz. He is playing at that type of level. He does not get the credit he deserves. He can create with his arm and legs. He’s smart checking out of plays in certain looks. In real command back there. He’s the best QB, probably, we've faced all year."
Earlier this season, Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker, another Heisman hopeful, torched Kentucky for three TD passes in a 44-6 win over Kentucky.
Florida head coach Billy Napier, who offered Bennett a scholarship when he was at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, also has praised the former JUCO quarterback. Bennett threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns in a win against his Gators.
“I just thought the guy had a really good skill set. He was a very, very productive player in high school. He’s a winner, and he had a little bit of a chip on his shoulder that I respected,” he said, per UGAsports.com.
Bennett broke out at Georgia last year after taking over for the injured JT Daniels, and he has handsomely rewarded head coach Kirby Smart since. This season, Bennett is making video game-type plays on the field every week.

The senior QB has accounted for 21 touchdown passes, 14 passing and seven rushing. Bennett has passed for 250 yards or more in nine of 10 games and thrown only five interceptions in 329 attempts.
Bennett leads all SEC starting quarterbacks with the fewest sacks (seven). He ranks second in passing yards (2,895) and third in completion percentage (67.8%) and rushing touchdowns (seven).
He'll be a handful Saturday against Kentucky, whose defense is third best in the SEC.
