Just before the start of the 2024 season, Kentucky Wildcats offensive lineman Gerald Mincey, who transferred to UK in January after spending the previous two seasons at Tennessee, told reporters that his team's goal was to have the best offense in the SEC.
Mincey also told reporters that he thinks Kentucky's tempo is faster than Tennessee's.
"It's just the same, but a little worse," said Mincey in August when asked about the tempo at Kentucky compared to the tempo at Tennessee. "We've gotta run outside zone to the right and then we've gotta hurry up to the ball. When we had the scrimmages, we've seen that we can actually catch the defense off guard and stress the defense out and then throw it over the top. We just all bought in to the system. And we all bought in to what it takes to prepare to have our offense -- our rule is to just to be the No. 1 offense in the SEC. I think we have a good group of guys right now that we can do that [with] and we just gotta keep working."
Kentucky has scored 49 points through their first three games of the season (the Wildcats are 1-2). The Vols, meanwhile, haven't scored fewer than 51 points in any of their three wins this season (to be fair, Kentucky has played two SEC opponents, South Carolina and Georgia, while Tennessee's toughest opponent has been NC State).
Mincey guaranteed this week that Kentucky's offense will find its groove "really soon".
"Man, it's limitless, you know, it's limitless," said Mincey on Tuesday when asked about the potential of Kentucky's offense. "We just want to keep improving on it, just keep getting better in all areas -- up front, the receivers, the quarterback. We're just going to keep building on it. And then it's going to come together. Really soon. I can guarantee you that."
Mincey and the Wildcats will get a chance to iron out the offensive wrinkles this weekend against Ohio before traveling to Oxford the following weekend for a huge showdown against Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels.
