Key playmaker of Ohio State's National Championship run shows off improvement that will benefit NFL career

Most draft pundits didn't have former Ohio State and Ole Miss star Quinshon Judkins as the third running back taken in the 2025 NFL Draft after he had a good but unspectacular 2024 season in Columbus. The Cleveland Browns opted for Judkins to replace Nick Chubb as the team's franchise back over TreVeyon Henderson.

While that decision will be closely evaluated for years to come, the 36th overall pick is in Cleveland with a clear runway for stardom. He's up against 2025 fourth-round pick Dylan Sampson and uninspiring veteran Jerome Ford for the starting gig.

Judkins was the workhorse for a Buckeyes offense that revitalized its run game with Chip Kelly as the coordinator. He finished the year with 1,060 yards and 14 scores on the ground. He didn't have the same quickness we often saw at Ole Miss, though, leading to a season that wasn't as consistently good as some hoped.

However, one run in the Browns' OTAs showed a quicker, more agile version of Judkins that immediately brought back Ole Miss highlights.

Overreacting to one clip of a run without fully pads would be silly, but a less worn-down and more explosive version of Judkins would be a big boon to the upside of himself and the offense.

Sampson was the presumed change-up back, but a slashier-version of Judkins boasts both power and nuance, plus the ability to split tacklers and hit chunk plays easier. That part of his game was missing at Ohio State, so he was usually more of the hammer than the big-play threat.

The Browns' run game in 2024 was abysmal as injuries devastated its offense. They'll start several new players across the unit, including at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and maybe a few blockers. Consistent availability would help tremendously.

Ford led the offense with only 565 yards but averaged 5.4 yards per carry. Nick Chubb and D'Onta Foreman were barely playable, lacking any real burst and unable to beat blockers before they swallowed them around the line of scrimmage. They both reached only 3.3 yards per carry.

Here's a summary of how our evaluation team viewed Judkins as a prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft class.

"Judkins came to Ole Miss as an unheralded three-star recruit in the 2022 recruiting class, but beat out transfer Ulysses Bentley IV for playing time and put up 1,476 yards and 16 touchdowns as a true freshman. He followed it up with another quality season of 1,053 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Judkins provides a versatile, three-down back who can do a little bit of everything for you. He can run inside zone, power and run outside where he softens angles and creates advantages with his burst. Judkins can also handle a heavy workload with over 235 carries in his first two seasons at the college level."
