Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart along with the University issued an official statement on the status updates of injured quarterback Carson Beck and punter Brett Thorson.

According to the school, Thorson will undergo season-ending surgery to his non-kicking leg, which he injured in Saturday’s SEC Championship Game win over the Texas Longhorns.

As for Beck, he and his family are weight treatment options for his injured elbow with no current timetable for his return.

“Carson and Brett are both fierce competitors and extremely hard workers,” Smart said in a statement. “I’m confident they will attack their rehab with the same determination they exhibit in their daily habits. We will be here to support them every step of the way.”

Georgia losing its starting quarterback and star punter is a major disappointment as they get ready for their first-ever 12-team playoff run.

But that just means the "next man up" mentality will be activated for two certain Bulldogs.

Backup sophomore quarterback Gunner Stockton will be expected to step up in Beck's place while freshman Drew Miller will make his debut in the Sugar Bowl with Thorson done for the season.

The good news is that the Bulldogs have three weeks to prepare for their first playoff game on Jan. 1, which should be enough time for Stockton and Miller to get adjusted to their starting roles.
