Kirby Smart Had A Lot To Say About College Football Playoff Rankings

The College Football Playoff committee released its updated rankings ahead of the Week 13 slate.

A couple of the biggest risers in the latest CFP rankings are Notre Dame moving from No. 8 to No. 6, Georgia moving from No. 12 to No. 10 and South Carolina moving from No. 21 to No. 18.

Just before the rankings were released on Tuesday night, Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart spoke with the media about voicing his opinion about the committee's decisions.

"I just want to fight for my team and fight for our program because I think we've got a deserving group of young men who work really hard, and I'm sure every coach would fight for their guys," Smart said, per Matt DeBary at Dawg Post.

Smart also spoke on potential Big Ten bias. There are currently four Big Ten schools in the top five -- Oregon at No. 1, Ohio State at No. 2, Penn State at No. 4 and Indiana at No. 5.

Despite the current rankings, Smart doesn't agree with the notion from fans and media personnel about Big Ten bias.

"I don't think they value the Big Ten over the SEC, I think they value wins and losses," Smart added. "So, they place people based on a column, a column of wins and a column of losses, not on the eye test of going to watch them play and see who they play.

"I think they base it on wins and losses. I don't think they say, well, this is better than that. They just say this record's better than that. That's the most simple way to do it. It's not necessarily the 12 best, so we'll see what happens. I'm not worried about it much. I got to worry about our team and what we got going on."

Smart also commented on scheduling marquee out-of-conference games, which could help boost a program's resume or derail a season.

"Just, I guess, the happiness of our fans," Smart said. "That's the incentive, right? Because fans want you to be in the playoffs, but they sure don't want you to play cupcakes. They want you to go play, you know, quality opponents."

Georgia heads into Week 13 with an 8-2 record, losing road games to the Alabama Crimson Tide and Ole Miss Rebels.

Despite the SEC losses, the Bulldogs have three ranked wins, which bolsters their resume. They've beaten three teams in the CFP rankings by double digits -- No. 3 Texas, No. 11 Tennessee and No. 17 Clemson.

The Bulldogs have two games left on their schedule, home games against UMass and Georgia Tech. In the latest College Football Playoff bracket, they're listed at No. 10, meaning a first-round game on the road.

But the CFP bracket is far from set, so Georgia could very well move up the rankings or even out of the playoff picture over the next few weeks.
