Ohio State fans have had about enough of Kirk Herbstreit over the last year or so, as the ESPN analyst has seemingly become more critical of his alma mater. While Herbstreit was less specific in past years about his issues dealing with Ohio State fans, he's been more direct in criticizing fans of the program.
Calling Ohio State fandom a "lunatic fringe" united the Buckeye faithful against Herbstreit during their College Football Playoff run. But another salt in the wound moment came right before that when his son, Chase Herbstreit, chose to play quarterback at Michigan.
The Cincinnati 3-star quarterback failed to earn a scholarship from top programs, including Ohio State and Michigan. He visited Georgia, Alabama, Penn State, and Notre Dame. In the end, he took a priority walk-on role with the Wolverines.
Herbstreit has been supportive, of course, but he revealed that his son wanted to play at Ohio State. Herbie said Chase has been “a lifelong Ohio State fan" and added, "Out of all my kids, he’s the guy that cried when they lost games. He’s an Ohio State junkie. Ohio State did not really pursue him to the point of offering him a scholarship. They were close.”
“Sherrone Moore and his staff believe, and I think they saw his competitive spirit and his fire and what he did on the field this year to give him an opportunity.” The ESPN host said, “It’s very different for our family because behind the scenes it’s scarlet and grey our entire lives.”
While it's fair for Kirk and Chase to choose their best opportunity, it's hard to imagine this was the right one for Chase. He's joining Michigan in the same offseason as No. 1 QB prospect Bryce Underwood. Chase will never play unless its an emergency situation.
Then, of course, Kirk shared this stunning picture of him in the maize and blue.

Here's On3's scouting report on Herbstreit.
Chase Herbstreit is the youngest son of ESPN lead college football and Amazon Prime NFL analyst Kirk Herbstreit. Chase Herbstreit moved from Nashville to Cincinnati as a ninth grader and took over as the starting quarterback for Ohio powerhouse St. Xavier midway through his sophomore season. He led St. X to two wins in its final two games as well as a victory in the first round of the state playoffs. “His competitive spirit and the, I think, intangibles are really unique with him,” his dad told On3. “You hear those sayings about whether he’s playing you in ping-pong, golf or '1-on-1 hoops, he’s going to be that guy you don’t want to go against because he’s going to find a way to win or say, ‘Okay, we’re playing again.’ And that’s how he is on the football field, ultra-competitive, which I think is really important at that position.”
