For as many issues as Dan Lanning has had this 2026 recruiting cycle, his Oregon Ducks can still land several foundational pieces who can define the program's upside in coming years. It's easy to dunk on how many recruits have spurned the Ducks, but getting someone like five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons can swing momentum back their way.
Lyons, the fifth-ranked quarterback and 17th-best recruit overall, has an interesting top six list and presumed favorites. While he's still considering Ohio State, Michiga, USC, and Ole Miss, insiders have Oregon battling BYU for his commitment.
USC, with a June 6 official visit, is looking to reclaim their perch as the program to beat for Lyons, but Lincoln Riley hasn't recaptured the magic he had when he took the job.
The Ducks will host Lyons on June 13, and he's well-known to be their top target in the class. Obviously that means NIL will play a part, but On3 reported, "The relationship with Will Stein, the Ducks offense and production from the quarterback position is very exciting. His comfort level with Dan Lanning, Stein and the program has also put the Big Ten champs in prime position."
So why is BYU in the mix? He has deep family and faith ties. BYU has the advantage of getting the last visit on June 20, and they'll surely sell him on how easy it would be for him to transition from his LDS Mission in 2026 to being a football player in 2027.
What bodes especially good for Oregon is they don't have a 2026 quarterback in their cart yet. USC has Jonas Williams and BYU has Kaneal Sweetwyne. The Ducks can sell a clearer path to playing time for his return.
