AUSTIN — On Monday, the preseason top 25 coaches poll was released. Along with eight other SEC teams on the list, the Texas Longhorns have now made their first-ever appearance at No. 1 in the coaches poll.
Ahead of head coach Steve Sarkisian’s fifth season in Austin, the Texas football program keeps elevating. After the 2024 season culminating with a loss to the eventual national champions in the Ohio State Buckeyes, the hopes in Austin are that he’ll take the program to heights it hasn’t seen since the early 2000s.
The Longhorns have now completed four practices through fall camp, and the team is looking good. New starting quarterback Arch Manning is looking like who he’s expected to be. Meanwhile, the receivers are battling it out.
Returning wide receivers DeAndre Moore and Ryan Wingo and guaranteed starters, both making plays in practice after playing significant roles in the offense last season. Transfer Emmett Mosley and redshirt freshman Parker Livingstone are seemingly vying for the third starting role, while freshmen Kaliq Lockett and Jaime Ffrench are making their cases for playing time.
With a veteran defense and a young, talented offense, led by Sarkisian and the coordinators, there’s no question as to why the Longhorns were voted the No. 1 team by other head coaches heading into the 2025 season.
Georgia sits behind Texas at No. 4 as the next SEC team on the list, followed by Alabama (No.8), LSU (No.9), South Carolina (No. 13), Ole Miss (No. 15), Florida (No. 17), Tennessee (No. 18), and Texas A&M (No. 21).
Texas will have to face three of those teams, playing at Florida, at Georgia, and then facing Texas A&M at home to finish out the regular season. It will be a challenge, but one that the Longhorns are more than capable of overcoming.
The Lognhorns will kick off the regular season on Aug. 30 at Ohio State at 11 AM CT on FOX. Longhorns fans can look out for continuous updates through fall camp to keep up with the state of the team, while the first AP Poll of the season will be released on Aug. 11.
