Longtime Cowboys fan Jaxon Smith-Njigba could be worthwhile first-round risk for Dallas

Despite the risk, Dallas may roll the dice and select longtime Dallas Cowboys fan and former Ohio State wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba with the 26th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Smith-Njigba grew up nearly 30 minutes outside of Dallas in Rockwall, Texas, and seemingly gushed when SB Nation's R.J. Ochoa recently asked him about playing for his hometown team.

"Being a Cowboy, it would be an honor and a blessing. Growing up, I always loved watching them play," he said.

Dallas might like the wideout's enthusiasm and potential. In 2021, he recorded 95 receptions for 1,606 yards, both Ohio State records. He also set a bowl record with 347 receiving yards in a 2021 Rose Bowl victory over Utah.

But Smith-Njigba battled a nagging hamstring injury in 2022 and only played in three games, sinking his draft stock.

"There are concerns about his top-end speed...and even the question of whether he is slot-only. But more than anything, why just one season?" wrote The Athletic's Bob Sturm.

He may be a boom-or-bust prospect since he demonstrates tremendous upside, yet his durability is an issue teams can't ignore, especially for a potential first rounder.

Ryan Day's WR track record is top-notch. The Ohio State HC developed 2022 Offensive Rookie of The Year Garrett Wilson, downplaying some concerns.

The Cowboys desperately need WR depth after finishing 18th in receiving yards. Smith-Njigba might be a worthwhile selection if he falls in the draft.

Dallas should keep a close eye on him at the NFL Scouting Combine on Feb. 28.
